The Official Sandbox of RMS

I don't think that I've ever explained why I decided to call my blog Rural Mama's Sandbox, so here I go, the simplest explanation:

Rural = We live in the country and we LOVE it.
Mama = I am a Mama
Sandbox = Our farm has TONS of sand so instead of stepping up on my "Soap Box" to say whatever I want on my blog, I step into my "Sandbox," plus the girls are always popping a squat and playing in the sand!

So, this summer, since the girls are outside playing a LOT and their love for the sand has become very evident, WE BOUGHT A SANDBOX! The Official Sandbox of Rural Mama's Sandbox is set up and full of play sand! I know, crazy right, we bought sand for the Sandbox even though our farm is full of sand. My husband thought I was nuts, but there is a huge different between our farm sand and play sand.

When we were looking into Sandboxes I knew that I wanted something that was shaded as well as something that could be covered to keep the critters out. We decided to go with a Sandbox from Sears.com. I was surprised at how fast it shipped and the box wasn't too heavy at all. I was able to move it around to where I needed to set it up. The directions left much to be desired, however, their example photos left me wondering may times if I was doing it correctly. I went slow and was able to figure out where everything went. Those that know me, know it was a huge deal that I put the Sandbox together by myself! Normally, my dear sweet husband usually assembles projects while I "assist" in whatever way I can.

I think I love our new Sandbox as the girls do. Having children is so much fun, you get to play with all the toys and still be a grown up! I hope you enjoy these photos of the girls playing in their new Sandbox, the "Official Sandbox of Rural Mama's Sandbox"!

Carrot Craving

I'd been craving carrots one day (about a month or so ago), so I bought a couple of 2 pound bags of Green Giant Baby Cut Carrots. On the back of one of the bags there was a recipe for a stir fry that sounded really good. I was missing a couple ingredients, so I changed it a little to work for me. Here is my modified recipe:

Chicken & Bacon Pasta Stir-Fry

Ingredients:
2 cups of uncooked penne pasta
4 pieces of bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 boneless skinless chicken breast halves, cut into thin strips
1 cup of Green Giant Baby Cut Carrots, quartered lengthwise
1/4 cup of water
2 cups of Sugar Snap Peas
1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese
4 tablespoons shredded Mozzarella & Provolone mix cheese (Sargento makes a good combo)

Directions:
1. Cook pasta as directed on package. Drain and cover to keep warm.
2. Mean while, heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, until hot. Add bacon, cook and stir4-6 minutes or until browned and crisp. Remove bacon from skillet and set aside.
3. Leave 1 tablespoon of bacon drippings in skillet. Add chicken strips to skillet, cook and stir for 3 to 5 minutes or until browned.
4. Add carrots and water, then cover and cook for 3 minutes.
5. Add sugar snap peas, garlic powder, and salt, and mix well. Cover and cook 3 to 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender and chicken is no longer pink in center, stir occasionally.
6. Stir in cooked pasta, bacon, and 4 tablespoons of shredded Mozzarella and Provolone. Cook and stir until cheese is melted.
7. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, let melt, then serve warm!

Makes 4 (1 3/4-cup) servings

You can find more delicious recipes on www.greengiantfresh.com
You may even be able to figure out which recipe I modified to fit my own ingredients!

This recipe was super yummy and I can't wait to try it again! It was a BIG hit in our house with everyone, which is huge since we all have a wide range of likes and dislikes when it comes to food!

Happy cooking dear followers!

Organic Farming

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Whitney Farms for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Our garden! As I had mentioned before, I have started a vegetable garden this year. I have never done anything like this before and it started off a little rocky. With a little TLC and some help from my friends, the garden has really started to come along well. The sugar snap peas that I started from seeds have gone wild and seem to have a mind of their own. Almost all of the plants I ordered have been delivered and I know that in no time we will be up to our ears in Tomatoes!
I want the produce from my garden to be as healthy for my family as possible, so I've been doing some research. I came across a company that produces organic soil and organic plant food.

APASSIONATA Ticket Giveaway

Okay readers, I am giggling like a kid in a CANDY SHOP! It's no secret that our family LOVES horses and even though I live and breath horses 24/7, I still feel like a child again when I get to go "see" other people's horses, especially high performance horses! I have been given the awesome opportunity to review APPASIONATA, an entertainment show featuring 40 talented horses from Europe! Not only do I get a chance to see these amazing horses and the human partners, one of my LUCKY readers will also win a couple of Tickets to see APASSIONATA as well! HOW COOL IS THAT?

Here is the official press release for APASSIONATA so that you can join me in a Horsey Sugar High!

Europe’s most successful live entertainment show
APASSIONATA

“The Beginning” -- featuring more than 40 horses of 13 different breeds --

North American Tour Premiere
Opens July 27 in Indianapolis at Bankers Life Fieldhouse
July 27 @ 8pm / July 28 @ 3pm and 8pm / July 29 @ 3pm

COMING TO INDIANAPOLIS for a limited engagement!

(INDIANAPOLIS) - APASSIONATA, Europe’s most successful live arena show, featuring more than 40 horses of 13 different breeds, is coming to Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis for four performances July 27-29. Tickets go on sale on Friday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse box office and all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.

Now in its ninth year in Europe, APASSIONATA has played to an audience of more than five million people in over 15 countries and now comes to North America with a new show, titled “The Beginning.” This theatrical sensation, with original music scored specifically to work with the horses, enchants families and horse lovers alike with the finest horsemanship, including magnificent dressage and exhilarating stunt riding.  The natural elegance, nobility, speed and agility of these animals is captivating.  Thirteen different breeds – from Bretons to Friesians – have been brought together from Europe and North America to create this evocative yet thrilling event.

Starting in 2003, APASSIONATA became an immediate sensation. In 2010, it won the prestigious PRG Live Entertainment’s “Best Show” award, among the highest honors in live entertainment on the European continent. The show’s success in Europe has been so remarkable and consistent that its producer-creator Peter Massine and his American producing partner Tanya Grubich, were motivated to bring the experience and excitement of APASSIONATA “The Beginning” to North America, which boasts the largest equine interest in the world.

Massine said “As APASSIONATA has grown to performing for over 545,000 people during its annual 30-city tours of the capitals of Europe, we were eager to introduce the show to the United States and Canada. Our main aim is to provide entertainment for the whole family. Whether you are young or old, everyone enjoys the two hours they spend with our horses.”

Massine and Grubich brought together an award winning, critically acclaimed, Broadway creative team led by director Scott Faris to bring all the elements together for the North American production. Faris has staged a dozen productions of the Broadway musical “Chicago,” “Bette Midler – The Showgirl Must Go On” at Caesar’s Palace and “Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena  Spectacular” which played a record-breaking forty month North American arena tour.  He was a veteran of the “Siegfried and Roy” team at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

When Massine originally created APASSIONATA, he sought out legendary horsemen and women of Europe, many of whom had spent their lives working with these animals or have continued the lineage of families that have worked with horses for generations, crossing many breeds of horses, and the wide range of how horse and man interact with each other. The emotional partnership displayed on stage between these horses and their equipes is a large part of the success of APASSIONATA.

Internationally acclaimed teams of equestrians joining APASSIONATA “The Beginning” include Sylvie Willms of the renowned Willms Family, who has devoted itself to the training and art of riding of thoroughbred horses for more than 300 years in both Belgium and France. Sylvie has been with APASSIONATA since 2003 and wows audiences with her superb freestyle Liberty Dressage and Friesian Quadrille.

Also coming to North America is team Valença, trained by Luis Valença. The reputation of this legendary grand master of the Portuguese School of the Art of Riding precedes him worldwide. Valença and his daughters have devoted their lives entirely to the training of Lusitanos and their horses have mastered to perfection various riding styles including Iberian Quadrille and Garrocha, which will be reflected in their riders’ brilliant skills.

One of France’s most talented equestrians, Laurent Jahan, will bring both his impressive exhibition of donkey comedy and his Pony Fantastique with the massive Breton, a stunning breed of draft horse. Jahan patiently spent more than three years training his donkeys, who have become fan favorites in APASSIONATA.

Icelandic native and Kentucky resident Gudmar Petursson is making his APASSIONATA debut in “The Beginning” with his equipe The Gudmar Petursson Show Team, The Knights of Iceland. Gudmar and his team have been wowing audiences across the United States for over 10 years, and when not on tour, splits his time between his training and breeding farm in Iceland and his farm near Louisville, Kentucky where he has over 40 prized Icelandic horses.

Rounding out the North American cast of riders are the Daredevils, an all-star team of top voltigeurs - 4 French and 3 Ukrainian riders – who come together for special engagements and performances such as the North American tour of APASSIONATA “The Beginning.”  These riders delight audiences with their breathtaking stunts and thrilling feats including the “Hungarian Post.” The Daredevils are trained by Erik Hasta Luego of France. The Hasta Luegos have a long tradition with the European APASSIONATA tour where they continually impress audiences with their beautiful and spectacular show riding.

After five million tickets, fifteen countries and nearly a decade of anticipation, North American audiences will finally get to see the breathtaking display of the beauty and the bond between horse and rider that can only be found in APASSIONATA.

Please visit www.apassionata.com for the video and full tour schedule.

To enter complete that following tasks on the Rafflecopter form below! The more options you complete, the higher your chances are of winning Tickets to see APASSIONATA in Indianapolis at Bankers Life Fieldhouse!

My Peacock Went MIA

Well, I realized tonight that I haven't updated my followers on my lovely Peacocks in a while... so here is the latest, including some photos of Mr. Handsome Houdini, as I affectionately call my Peacock.

In case you had no idea I have a Peacock, here is the short story on how I got him: I went to an auction and bid on two peachicks and a turkey (they were in the same lot). I won and was giddy to bring home my new peachicks, that was about 2 years ago. About a year after I figured out that I had a matching pair of Blue India Peafowl. I was SO excited to have a pair and was excited about hatching eggs in the future. (You can read a little about my Peacocks in these other posts!) One night a predator got into the coop and killed several of my chickens AND my peahen. I was devastated but relieved to still have the peacock. I put him in a more secure location and he faired well, until this year.

I made him a nice outside pen attached to his coop and he would come out for about 10 minutes a day. I figured since he was so shy I would open the pen an let him roam to yard for bugs...

Well, he took off on me. He went MIA for about a  WEEK AND A HALF! Then, then about a week ago I spotted him walking down the road in front of our house. I ran out and caught him (Side note: I got REALLY bad poison ivy/oak from chasing him into the woods, but oh so worth it). I put him in his coop pen and he attacked the sunflower seeds and Flock Raiser that I had set out for him. It was like he hadn't eaten the whole time he was gone (I know he ate, but he sure did miss his normal feed!).

Well, I had to run to town and shut him up in the pen. When I got back he was walking around the yard. It was dark so I didn't want to chase him to catch him and then loose him in the woods, so I herded him towards the coop and he roosted on the roof for the night. Then next morning he was gone. A day later I herd him in the trees down the road. I tried to get him but he was too far up. So, I left him alone and left his food out next to his old coop. The next day he was back in our yard hanging out.

It's been about a week since he came back for good and he enjoys relaxing by my turkey's pen by the woods, he seems to have taken a liking to my Royal Palm Tom. He will walk around the yard and eat bugs and weeds around 5:00PM every night and go down to the area around the coop to get his feed and then up in the trees he goes for the night. I was sure that he was GONE for good the first time he left me and now I am SO excited that he has stayed with me even though he is loose. I am planning a LARGE (more secure) coop and flight pen for him and I can't wait to get a couple peahens for him. I know he misses the peahen I lost a year ago.

I am SO thankful to God that he came back. I was praying that he was safe the entire time he was gone! I know it sounds kind of silly to pray for a peacock, but he is proof that God does answer prayers, even the silly ones! I hope to have MANY MANY more years with him, he is by far my FAVORITE bird that I own!

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

"Who can find a virtuous woman? She is far more precious than jewels...
Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle.
Her sons rise up and call her blessed.
Her husband also praises her:
Many women are capable, but you surpass them all!
Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised."

Crazy Poultry Obsession Strikes Again

Bantams - 4 Silver Laced & 2 Gold Laced
Wyandottes and 2 Arucana
Okay somebody shake me! My crazy poultry obsession strikes again. Spring is a very hard time of year for me. Why? Because all of the farm stores have tubs of cute chicks and ducklings and such for sale. I've purposely tried to avoid going into these stores but have failed. I originally went in to see if they had ducklings. I've lost all my ducks and REALLY miss using duck eggs. Well, I ended up with 8 chicks, but I still wanted ducks so I decided to check another store. I think I should enter some kind of support group... PAA, Poultry Addicts Anonymous... By the time I got home, I had acquired a total of 18 chicks, 4 geese and 9 ducklings. Somebody shake me!

2 Rouen, 3 Pekin, 3 Khaki, & a mystery duckling
2 African Geese, and 2 Toulouse Geese
Here is the BEST part, we are in the process of moving (same property, just different part of the farm) AND I have no where built at the new place to house my new charges. Currently, they are living in large troughs on my covered porch and go outside in exercise pens during the day. I also have a kiddie swimming pool that I put the geese and ducklings in so that they get some swim time in every day. So, I am making it work and it's working well right now since they are small. I just have to plan and figure out my new Poultry pens at the new place before they outgrow the troughs.
Big Sister holding a Toulouse Gosling!

Like I said, somebody shake me. My CRAZY POULTRY OBSESSION STRIKES AGAIN!

If anyone knows of any sites for AWESOME poultry houses and pens please leave me a comment!

Have a GREAT Day dear followers!

Sponsor Spotlight: Go Go Natural

Our third and final Sponsor Spotlight for the Mother's Day Cloth Diaper Giveaway is Go Go Natural! They are sponsoring a Blueberry Trainer for one lucky winner!

GoGo Natural is an online one stop shop for all your cloth diaper needs. From newborn to potty training, Go Go Natural has is ALL! Go Go Natural was "built empower women to live their dreams of financial prudence with good environmental stewardship."

Check out this mini interview with Meredith, the mom and mastermind behind Go Go Natural!

Kelsey: What makes selling cloth diaper special to you?

Meredith: I love saving the environment and money. My real passion is meeting with mom’s individually and helping them set up their stash and plan for the arrival of their baby.  Letting them know there are other moms out there for support & where to find them.

Kelsey: What was the first cloth diaper you purchased?

Meredith: I am so sentimental – I even have my receipt, lol! A Happy Heiny sized pocket diaper, 1 bumGenius 2.0 one-size diaper, 1 dozen green earth prefolds, 1 bummi cover, 1 wool cover, 3 pack of snappis.

Kelsey: Do you have any favorite cloth diapers? If so, what brand(s) do you like most and which color/prints do you love?

Meredith: My favorite diapers are the Fuzzi Bunz perfect size (crushed berries & spearmint – all-time favorite print was the daisy on red) My favorite one-size diaper is the DinkleDooz in pink.

Kelsey: What do you think is the biggest pro to using cloth diapers? The biggest con?

Meredith: Saving money biggest pro, biggest con would be how easy it can be to talk oneself out of using the diapers if they get leaky, stinky, etc. All easy fixes you just have to have the drive & correct info to persevere.

Kelsey: If you could give Moms one tip to help them succeed in using cloth diapers, what would it be?

Meredith: Don’t be too worried about ’ruining’ your diapers. They are your diapers & you can honestly do whatever you want to them. The best thing is to be educated on if I do xyz than xyz will happen to the diapers.  I think many get caught up in manufacturer warranty rules & often don’t find the necessary solutions to cure the ‘stinkies’ or the ‘leakies’.  If you find yourself in a bind – honestly email me I would love to help you succeed with your diapers. Let’s save the environment together, one diaper at a time.
