Home Sweet... High Chair?

About a week or so ago I was moving our picnic tables around in the back yard so that I could easily mow. Next to the picnic tables we have a high chair. We were given two high chairs when Big Sister was about 6 months, but our house really isn't big enough to store two, so we use one outside. The top tray wasn't hooked on, it was just laying over the seat, so I grabbed the tray so that it wouldn't fall when I moved the high chair. Under the tray was a nest. I went to grab the nest and remove it from the seat when I spotted something inside, 4 small speckled eggs. I didn't know how long they'd been there, nor did I know whether or not Mommy Bird was coming back for them, however, I decided to just move the high chair, leave it alone, and "let nature take it's course." This past week was pretty busy and I didn't get the picnic tables moved back after I mowed. Yesterday, I was outside and decided that it was about time to move the picnic tables back to where they were supposed to be, as well as the high chair. I went to grab the high chair when I remembered that I had laid the tray on top, just as it had been before, so if I moved the high chair, it would fall. I grabbed the tray and jumped as Mommy Bird whizzed past my head, I think I scared her as bad as she scared me. I couldn't even tell you what color she was because she moved so fast and I was so startled. I was curious about the eggs so a bent down to take a peak. To my surprise I saw a tiny yellow beak open and close! The eggs had hatched! It looked fairly newborn, almost completely naked, with a tiny bit of fuzz on the head and the eyes were still shut. I looked a little closer and saw not one but FOUR little yellow beaks! ALL of the eggs had hatched! I took several photos with my cell phone and then decided to move the high chair back to its original resting place. I grabbed under the edged of the chair and BAM! A sharp, intense, nagging pain shot up my arm. Mommy Bird had friends/body guards! On the backside of the high chair a group of wasps (or hornets or some type of flying stinging machine) had taken up residents as well. I pulled my hand back fast as the bugger that got me flew around mocking me. My right index finder had a small red spot that ached with pain. The pain was really intense and it instantly began to swell. I wasn't sure if I had ever been bit/stung by this type of bug before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm not allergic to bee stings, so I thought I would be okay, but I called my hubby to come home just in case. The last thing I needed was to pass out from paralysis or respiratory distress, alone with two small children. Well, hubby came home, stayed a while and as the pain started to ease we both felt like the worst was over and he was safe to head back to the barn to work.

Today, it feels a little better. My whole index finger is warm to the touch,  swollen and numb. There is a sore feeling that goes from the knuckle to my wrist, it is still a little hard to move, but now my finger itches. It didn't itch yesterday, but today it itches like crazy. The good things is that the insanely intense sharp pain is gone. Hopefully all of this will subside soon, I've got way too much to do to worry about a silly little finger, hehe. I want to keep checking on the Baby Birds, I know, it sounds silly. I'll just have to watch out for Mommy's Bird's body guards next time! I hope you enjoy the photos I took of the Baby Birds! Nature is so beautiful, God sure knew what he was doing!

Home Sweet Highchair!
And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens."
So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." -Genesis 1:20-22 (ESV)

The nest!

Kubota Kid Safety Kit Giveaway!

Living on a horse farm is not all fun and games (but for the most part it is fun), it’s a lot of work. And to do that work, we rely on farm equipment to help us get the job done. Having small kids around the farm can be somewhat stressful and teaching your kids Farm Safety could mean the difference between a fun time and a trip to the ER!

Did you know that according to the Progressive Agriculture Foundation, each year an estimated 15,000 children who visit, live or work on farms or ranches are injured and more than 100 children die of agriculture-related injuries in the United States alone?

Until recently I was not aware of those scary statistics!

These statistics are simply too high, and Kubota is dedicated to helping families make sure those summer memories are as safe and happy as possible by offering “Kubota’s Farm Safety Tips for Kids” to help families start the safety conversation as early as possible.

Kubota’s Farm Safety Tips for Kids:

  •  Stop, look and listen when playing outside, especially on the farm, and always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Farm equipment is not safe to ride on even when an adult is present.
  • Tractors are not toys. They are powerful machines only to be used by adults who are thoroughly familiar with the equipment.
  • Children should never ride on a tractor; a tractor only has one seat and that seat is intended for the operator. Just say “no” if someone wants to give you a ride. It is not safe to be a “rider” when the tractor is intended for one operator.
  • Stay out of the path of all moving equipment. And, stand far away from a tractor when it is being started; when it is running; and, especially when it is working.
  • Never stand behind a tractor – whether it is running or not – the operator might not see you and you could get hurt.
  • Be a “safety first sheriff” and encourage use of seatbelts for your entire family. Just like in a car, a tractor is equipped with a seatbelt for safety. Additionally, a Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS) on a tractor is in place to protect the driver.
The Kubota website also has an Equipment Safety page with an excellent Education Resources section that include Videos, Podcasts, and Tractor Safety Games and Activities you can print off to help teach your kid about the do’s and don’ts of being on a farm and around farm equipment. Go here to view Kubota’s Equipment Safety Page: http://kubota.com/safety/TractorSafety.aspx

Kubota is also offering a Kubota Kid Safety Kit to one of my lucky readers! The Safety Kit includes:

·         Ten Commandments of Tractor Safety” coloring book

Yum Yum Dishes Giveaway Winner

Congratulations to....

Amy Jo S. you are the winner of a Yellow Yum Yum Dish! Congrats! I will be sending you an e-mail to verify, in the morning!

Good night dear followers!

I own all the "Unpairs"

Sad to report that last night I lost the last of my hens. A family of racoons has claimed the life of ALL my chickens, well all except the Rooster. I have the oddest poultry left, I have the "Unpairs". I have a Rooster and no hens. I have a Peacock and no Peahen. I have a Turkey, but no Female Turkey. I have an African Goose and no Gander. The only pair I have left is a Pekin Drake and a Rouin Duck, although they are not the same breed. I am ready to through my hands up in the air and submit to these Racoons!

With the loss of our farm dog this winter, my poultry just didn't have a chance. He was our defender, he never once went after my birds, he knew they were special, or rather, he knew that was where I got eggs from... and boy did he LOVE eggs! If I dropped one or if there was a blemish or crack in an egg, he always got a special treat. I miss our dear sweet Joey, the BEST farm dog ever. A GOOD farm dog is hard to come by and they are never for sale. I badly need another, but I would need to train it... which takes time... something I have very little of. Joey was a Bernese Mountain Dog cross and I hope to some day find another one like him to continue is legacy on the farm. He was sweet and gentle, loved EVERYONE and would insist on getting petted by rubbing his paw on your leg. I don't know how he knew it but during the day he just hung out and was "off duty", the only exception being if a horse got loose or tried to eat grass on his side of the fence. He would bark at them to keep the horses in line! But as soon as the sun started setting he was "on call" and scouted the property. No dog, Coyote, Fox, Raccoon, Opossum was safe if they entered our farm!

So, now what do I do?

Thanks for listening dear followers and stay tuned for a new giveaway coming soon!

Yum Yum Dishes Review & Giveaway

As a busy Mom I have to admit that most of the time I don't pay close attention to what I snack on or how much I eat. I pretty much grab and go, and sometimes grab some more. In my Snikiddy Snacks Review I noted that I opened the bag on the way home and had the bag almost gone by the time I got home. This type of snacking is just what you Don't want to do. I had been concerned about my lack of weight loss after Little Sister was born, however I hadn't been doing anything to help loose the baby weight. I recently found a cute little product called Yum Yum Dishes. These small ceramic bowls are JUST the right size for a quick snack!

As stated on her website:

Yum Yum Dishes™ are the creation of Mom and restaurant owner, Tracy Adler. During maternity leave following the birth of her daughter, Rachel, Tracy developed "a strong relationship" with her pantry door. With each visit to the pantry, she found herself saying "I can eat this - I'm breastfeeding," or "I need a few extra calories!" Though she would pop open a jar of peanuts, or a bag of chips for what she intended to be a quick nibble, Tracy inevitably carried the goodies back to the couch and before she knew it, would consume half the bag! What bothered her more than the calories was the fact that she wasn't even consciously aware of how much she was eating.

With the help of artist Robert Sheeran, Tracy spent about six months developing the 4 ounce ceramic bowls and began offering them at her restaurant as gift items, or as part of an appetizer or dessert order (patrons get to keep the Yum Yum Dish™ their food arrived in).

Yum Yum Dishes™ are available through Tracy's website, www.yumyumdish.com. They are dishwasher safe (though they really love to be hand-washed). Presented in four colors, each bowl also includes some encouragement to end your snacking, letting you know that "Yum Yum time is over."
The very popular Yum Yum Dishes™ message of "all things in moderation" inspired Tracy to apply that same healthful concept to the menu at Cafe on the Square, where diners can order smaller portions of gourment dishes for lunch or dinner.

The day I received my Yum Yum Dish I couldn't believe how tiny it was! At first I thought, "Oh No, I can't do this, that dish is too tiny for snacks!" But I was wrong. You would be surprised just how satisfying a 4 ounce snack is! I began by grabbing a handful of my favorite snacks and putting them in the dish. If I could fit more than one handful, it was a bonus. I would only have one dish of each type of snack a day. So, if I ate pretzels in the morning, I had to choose another type of snack later in the day. I also forced myself NOT to go back for seconds. I could choose a different snack, I just couldn't go back for seconds of the same snack. I began to become aware of how much I really was snacking. I realized that I had been snacking all day, not monitoring the amount of snacks, and I wasn't eating balances meals though the day. I couldn't believe how much I was eating all day long, no wonder I wasn't loosing my baby weight! I finally got into a schedule that worked. I made time for regular healthy meals and I used my Yum Yum Dish when I needed a snack, but only a couple times a day instead of all day long. A great feature of this dish is the writing on it. "Yum Yum Time" is written on the rim and "Over" is written on the bottom for the inside of the dish. It is a friendly reminder that you had your snack and now your are done! This dish not only changed my waistline but changed my attitude about snacking and food in general!

Overall, I find this product very helpful, it is cute, easy and just fun to use! I think the ONLY down fall is that I find them just a tad too highly priced.
