Kelsey: What makes selling cloth diaper special to you?

Meredith: I love saving the environment and money. My real passion is meeting with mom’s individually and helping them set up their stash and plan for the arrival of their baby. Letting them know there are other moms out there for support & where to find them.

Kelsey: What was the first cloth diaper you purchased?

Meredith: I am so sentimental – I even have my receipt, lol! A Happy Heiny sized pocket diaper, 1 bumGenius 2.0 one-size diaper, 1 dozen green earth prefolds, 1 bummi cover, 1 wool cover, 3 pack of snappis.

Kelsey: Do you have any favorite cloth diapers? If so, what brand(s) do you like most and which color/prints do you love?

Meredith: My favorite diapers are the Fuzzi Bunz perfect size (crushed berries & spearmint – all-time favorite print was the daisy on red) My favorite one-size diaper is the DinkleDooz in pink.

Kelsey: What do you think is the biggest pro to using cloth diapers? The biggest con?

Meredith: Saving money biggest pro, biggest con would be how easy it can be to talk oneself out of using the diapers if they get leaky, stinky, etc. All easy fixes you just have to have the drive & correct info to persevere.

Kelsey: If you could give Moms one tip to help them succeed in using cloth diapers, what would it be?

Meredith: Don’t be too worried about ’ruining’ your diapers. They are your diapers & you can honestly do whatever you want to them. The best thing is to be educated on if I do xyz than xyz will happen to the diapers. I think many get caught up in manufacturer warranty rules & often don’t find the necessary solutions to cure the ‘stinkies’ or the ‘leakies’. To get to know Lisa a little better and help my readers understand the heart behind her business, I decided to do a brief interview with Lisa Emmons.

Kelsey: What makes selling cloth diaper special to you?

Lisa: What makes selling cloth diapers special to me is the difference it makes to my customers and their babies. Last week I had a customer come in frustrated with disposable diapers. She said that her baby doesn’t sleep through the night due to irritation caused by disposables and wanted to try one cloth diaper to see if it made a difference. After trying the diaper, she reported that her son slept through the night for the first time and woke up happy, dry and no rash. This is why I do what I do.

Kelsey: What was the first cloth diaper you purchased?

Lisa: The very first cloth diaper I purchased 12 years ago were prefolds and fitteds from a mail order catalog with some Gerber diaper covers with my first son. These definitely didn’t work as well as today’s modern cloth diaper. The first modern cloth diapers I bought for my daughter to try included 1 bumGenius 3.0 in hook and loop, a small perfect size FuzziBunz pocket and some Kissaluvs Size 0 fitted diapers along with some Thirsties Diaper Covers and loved them all.

Kelsey: Do you have any favorite cloth diapers? If so, what brand(s) do you like most and which color/prints do you love?

Lisa: I still really like the bumGenius brand and now have upgraded my stash to 4.0 snaps. I also love the perfect size FuzziBunz. Although I have not been disappointed with any other diapers I have purchased and used over the years.

Kelsey: What do you think is the biggest pro to using cloth diapers? The biggest con?

Lisa: I find a lot of satisfaction each time I do laundry and hang my diapers to dry on my drying rack in the kitchen and know that all of those diapers are not ending up in landfills. There are so many pros to using cloth, my babies have never had a rash, I never run out of diapers, I save so much money and I simply think there is nothing cuter than a baby wearing a cloth diaper. I simply can’t think of a con to using cloth worth mentioning.

Kelsey: If you could give Moms one tip to help them succeed in using cloth diapers, what would it be?

Lisa: I think it’s important to be able to visit a store to talk with someone who is knowledgeable in person and to be able to experiment with the diapers to find the one that will be best for you. It is so hard to read reviews on line and to make a decision about cloth without seeing them up front and personal.

I am a married woman, with no kids on the horizon just yet, but still I find myself thinking about diapers. Again. Does this seem strange to anyone else? Still, I know plenty of moms, and I have changed plenty of diapers, so it’s not as if I am a complete noob—there’s just no reason for me to be contemplating cloth vs. disposable at this time in my life. Well, actually *this* time I do have an excuse: my sister just had a baby! No matter the reason, I have diapers on the brain, so…here goes.

Not being a mom (I’ve heard it matters), I cannot imagine dealing so closely with that much human waste! With cloth diapers, you have more to do with it, right? I mean you empty it into the toilet, and then you wash them, right? And if you are out and about, you have to carry it around…so that ups the ick factor. Until you think about using disposables instead…what, so I am just going to gift wrap poo and leave it out for others to deal with many years later in the landfill? I might as well set it on fire on my neighbor’s porch! And just how many diapers go to the landfill?!…the thought of a poo mountain just sitting there staggers (and, I’ll admit it, amuses) me.

I’ve heard the argument that washing cloth diapers increases fuel consumption and is just as bad for the environment, but that doesn’t sound right to me…didn’t they use fuel to make the disposables, and then all that packaging? Not to mention they don’t degrade and take up landfill space. So I think cloth wins out in the green argument; though I’ll have to check the stats.

But what is right for my (hypothetical) child? Good question! I can see pros and cons to either disposable or cloth. With disposable, they have neat technology where you can see quickly whether it’s wet, I think the fit is better (no leaks), and it is more sanitary (no build of bacteria to contend with). Not to mention there is less laundry. BUT they are full of chemicals, which is can be bad for the baby’s skin and smell bad, and we’ve discussed the trash issue. Cloth diapers are cute (you can get designers these days) eco-friendly, and soft against your baby, but then again they aren’t as convenient, and require the aforementioned waste handling and washing. Still, when answering better for the baby, I think the point goes to cloth, again.

So, I think I will be using cloth diapers, taking the suggestion of RuralMama here which is best. I’ll be sure check back with you when I do have kids, and to let you know whether my decision stands.
